It is a known fact that not all stress is unhealthy but there is the healthy part of stress that is so important in life even in childhood. Everybody in life needs some challenge of some kind, both children and adults alike, in order to be spurred to develop and grow in life.
Nevertheless, the trend that we have seen in the modern day education system has been the case of the healthy stress being displaced and its place being taken by toxic stress. Toxic stress basically occurs when the demands that we face in life get to consistently outplace the ability we have to cope with the demands. Here are some of the impacts that toxic stress has on the various people groups involved in education.
The first group we will take a look at is the impact that toxic stress will have on the students. This will have an impact on attention, emotion and mood regulation, sleep and as well the interest in learning in a number of cases. What makes this all the more worrying a trend is the fact that such cases of prolonged exposure to toxic stress will have quite an impact on the child’s mental and physical health going into the future.
The other segment that is unduly impacted by toxic stress are the educators. Educators will see the effects of toxic stress in their lives starting out in effects such as decreased productivity and creativity in their duties and these finally grow to be more serious cases such as feelings of anxiety, dissociation, frustrations and finally bear in full swing in complete burnouts. By the way, you need to note the fact that this is actually one major cause of the high turnover rate that has been seen in the teaching fraternity.
On the parents too, effects have been seen which are as a result of toxic stress. This has basically led to poor parenting habits where many parents have not quite been as effective at having an emphatic, present centered relationship with their children and instead approach it from a “to do” list style of parenting.
The solution to a number of these problems is mindfulness in education. Mindfulness education is such an ideal solution for a number of these problems, in fact all, for the fact that it is the kind of approach that actually goes way into the root cause of the problem, far beyond the conceptual mind to tackle the problem directly. Remember the fact that this is so necessary for the fact that the roots of toxic stress lie in the nervous system. Mindfulness actually develops from the point where we start being as aware of the thoughts that we have, emotions, sensations and the environment around us.
